Yellow Springs is a small village positioned in Greene County, Ohio. Is it part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located about 20 miles east of downtown Dayton, Ohio. As of 2016, there were almost 4,000 people living in Yellow Springs according to the United States Census Bureau.
The history of Yellow Springs dates back to the early 19th century when European-American residents arrived. Until 1823, there was a post office known as the Ludlow Office operating in the community. Two years later, followers of Robert Owen arrived to create a utopian community based on socialism. The population of the community grew significantly after the arrival of the Owenites although their vision never truly developed. During the period of the Owenites’ presence, several hotels and restaurants were opened as stories of the community’s namesake spread. The community was named for a nearby spring that was said to have healing properties. As time passed, the community continued to grow. By 2000, Yellow Springs was home to 3,700 people. Today, the village is home to an active population residents and a thriving business community. More than 75 shops, galleries, restaurants, and pubs are located in the village. In Yellow Springs, there is something for every individual and type of interest.
